W The SouthWest Chat

elcome to the July issue of SouthWest Horse Trader. We’ve got several informative articles on training tips including clinics and events that you can attend. As I drove to the Rose Palace in San Antonio last week-

end I noticed that all the markeys were set to “Hurricane Sea- son is Here” warnings and all of the evacuation signs were up and posted for the next evacuation. I’ve lived in Hurricane Alley for some time. I’ve weath-

ered several here both with and without horses. Evacuation is tricky. You need to have a plan and leave EARLY. I’d rather zip my horses to my northern friends prior to the 24- 48 hours before it hits alarm. Sounds crazy, but you don’t have to worry about finding fuel, sitting in traffic, and all the stress that goes with last minute evacuation. Important things to remember: • Have an evacuation plan NOW. Where are you going?

What is your backup location? What do you need to take with you? • Have your coggins & vaccinations up-to-date and in

your rig. • Take your own buckets, fans, muck tubs, hoses, etc.

Pack just like a horse show. No one is going to supply any- thing. • Prepare current paper and electronic copies of pictures

of your horse for reclaiming purposes, particularly if the horse isn’t tattooed or branded. Put yourself in the picture.

The SouthWest’s Marketing Guide for the Equine Industry

Can’t evacuate? Here are some tips. • Take photographs, but also attach identifica-

tion information to the horse’s body. This can be done by sealing the info in a plastic bag and braid- ing it into the mane or tail, writing your name and number in livestock paint on the side of your horse, or clipping your name and number on your horse. Dr. William Moyer, professor and special as-

sistant to the dean at Texas A&M College of Vet- erinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences stated, “Take the threat seriously. You need to make the de- cision to leave as soon as you can. If you wait until the last minute, you’re placing yourself and your horse in harm’s way. Over 100,000 animals were lost during Hurricane Ike.” Evacuating when a hurricane hits the coast is a

stressful and scary experience, especially when evacuating with horses. While tornadoes give little warning for evacuation, hurricanes can give enough lead time to actually move people and horses out of the storm’s expected path. But even with that time, preparing for equine evacuations can be cru- cial to the survival of horses. Plan Now, make your arrangements, and pack an evacuation kit for you and your horse. Hopefully you won’t need to use it! w
