The Schreiber Collection


An unusual collection of Staffordshire salt- glaze ceramics, collected personally by Lady Charlotte Schreiber, comprising:


• A pair of Staffordshire salt-glaze white stoneware plates circa 1765, each press- moulded to the centre with trellis-pattern below a well with scrolling leaf ornament below further pierced trellis-pattern and moulded ozier border within a shaped rim, 8.5in. diam. (2)


• A Staffordshire salt-glaze white stoneware lozenge-section teapot and cover circa 1750, with recumbent lion finial, fluted spout and lamprey handle, moulded with scallop- shells within lozenge and square panels with key-pattern ornament and seeded sections (some damages to rim and tip of spout), 5in. high. (1)


• A Staffordshire salt-glaze white stoneware patty-pan circa 1760, of triangular form moulded with flowerhead radiating scrolling tendrils, the corners with shell ornament, the border also concealing a mask, in profile to the right (tiny chip to underside of rim, some minor restoration to rim), 5” (13cms). (1)


• A Staffordshire salt-glaze white stoneware teapot circa 1745-50, perhaps John Wedgwood at the Big House Works, modelled as a three-storey three-bay house with the Royal Arms above the door, the spout formed as a swan’s neck with a grasping hand above it, a serpent and masks to the base terminal, the scroll handle cut with facets to the upper part, 3.75” (9.7cms). (1)


• A Staffordshire salt-glaze white stoneware patty-pan circa 1750-60, of moulded heart form with shell and scroll ornaments (chipping to rim), 3.75” (9.5cms). (1)


• A Staffordshire salt-glaze white stoneware teapot and cover circa 1750, the lozenge section with shell panels within Greek key and Vitruvian scroll bands, dolphin finial to cover and a dragon head spout, and lamprey handle on a moulded foot (some restoration to cover and finial, and some restoration to body), 5” (13cms). (2)


• A pair of Staffordshire salt-glaze white stoneware sauce-boats circa 1765, each of oval form moulded with trellis-pattern reserved with flowerheads within scroll borders and applied with strap handle with grooves (one with hairline crack), 6.5” (16cms) long. (2)


• A Staffordshire salt-glaze white stoneware jug circa 1745, of hexagonal baluster form moulded with crowned double-headed eagles, figures and mythical beasts among tendrils (some chipping to rim), 3.5” (9cms). (1)


• A Staffordshire salt-glaze white stoneware sauce-boat circa 1750, of oval form and press-moulded with shells and scrolling foliage and winged cherubs heads, the spouts with snails to either side, applied with groove strap handle on three lion-mask and paw feet, 6.5” (16.5cms) long. (1)


• A Staffordshire salt-glaze white stoneware coffee cup circa 1745-50, press-moulded with vignettes of figures at various pursuits, mythical beasts and crowned double-headed eagles below coats-of-arms (crack to rim and cracked around foot rim), 3.35” (8cms). (1)


• A Staffordshire salt-glaze white stoneware soup-plate circa 1765, the shaped border moulded with panels of seeded and trellis pattern ornament on ozier-moulded ground around a plain centre (crack to rim), 9.5” (24cms). (1)


• A pair of Staffordshire salt-glaze white stoneware oval stands circa 1755, press moulded with fretted trellis-pattern within shaped ozier and trellis-pattern panels to the borders (one with a slight crack to the well), 8” (20cms). (2)


• Two similar Staffordshire salt-glaze white stoneware tea-caddies circa 1750, each of rectangular form with botanical studies of herbs, each with impressed titles (one with chip to rim), 3.75” (9.5cms). (2)


• A Staffordshire salt-glaze white stoneware bowl circa 1745-50, of flared form, press- moulded with crowned double-headed eagles, camels and figures at various pursuits, and other subjects within panels above a gadroon lower section on a flared circular foot (faint hairline crack to rim), 6” (15.3cms). (1)


• A Staffordshire salt-glaze white stoneware stand circa 1765, of leaf form , the plain centre inside a border of overlapping leaves issuing from a stalk handle on three flowerhead feet, 10.25” (26cms). (1)


• A Staffordshire salt-glaze white stoneware teapot and cover circa 1750, of octagonal baluster form, with press-moulded panels depicting figures, stags, birds and mythical beasts against seeded patterned ground and rectangular cushion panels below, on a flared foot (cracked to rim, chipping to spout), 5” (13cms). (2)


• A Staffordshire salt-glaze white stoneware cream-jug circa 1750, of lozenge section, press-moulded with a pectin shell within Vitruvian scroll and key-pattern ornament, 2.75” (6.2cms). (1)


• A Staffordshire salt-glaze white stoneware teapot and cover circa 1750, the cover with recumbent lion finial above a lamprey handle and a mask spout, incised with a lozenge ornament between sections, applied with extruded and chipped clay (one full length crack down one side and through the base, cracks to lower part), 5.24” (13cms). • A Staffordshire salt-glaze white stoneware miniature tea-bowl and stand circa 1750, crisply moulded with birds among flowers, the stand with similar ornament, 2.75” (7cms). (2)


• A Staffordshire salt-glaze white stoneware teapot and cover circa 1750, of octagonal baluster form, press-moulded with figures and beasts at various pursuits below coats-of-arms, masks, etc., above lower rectangular cushion panels on a flared moulded foot, 5.5” (14cms). (2)


• A pair of Staffordshire salt-glaze white stoneware plates circa 1765, each of octagonal form, press-moulded with a border of trailing foliage inside a bead- moulded rim around a plain well (one chipped and cracked to rim, the other with crack to rim and around well), 8.25” (21cms). (2)


• A Staffordshire salt-glaze white stoneware baluster jug circa 1745-50, of hexagonal baluster form press-moulded with unicorns, and other animals and figures below coats- of-arms, on flared and moulded foot (tiny rim chip, small chip to spout), 4.5” (11.5cms). (1)


• Three Staffordshire salt-glaze white stoneware saucers and two tea bowls circa 1745-50, each press-moulded with flowerheads to the centre, radiating fan- shaped panels of stylised figures, mythical beasts and crowned double-headed eagles, 5” (13cms). (5)


• A Staffordshire salt-glaze white stoneware teapot and cover circa 1750, pectin shell- moulded of baluster form with scrolling foliage, the spout moulded with a stylized figure and a faceted strap handle on three mask paw feet, (the cover slightly ill-fitting, the cover restored, further restorations to spout), 6” (15cms). (2)


• A Staffordshire salt-glaze white stoneware teapot and cover circa 1750, of lozenge form, the moulded cover with lion finial and a dragon head spout and dolphin handle, the panels moulded with shell ornament within Greek key and Vitruvian scroll bands supported by a stepped and moulded flared foot, 6” (15cms). (2)


• A Staffordshire salt-glaze white stoneware teapot and cover circa 1750, the pectin shell-moulded body of baluster form, press-moulded with shells issuing scrolling tendrils and flowerheads applied with a double-scroll handle, the spout embraced by an emaciated figure (the cover flange with section missing and with crack, small chips to spout), 5.5” (14cms). (2)


• A pair of Staffordshire salt-glaze white stoneware patty-pans circa 1765, each of heart form and press-moulded with shell and scroll ornament (small rim chip to one), 4.25” (11cms) h. (2)
