The Broadcasting Network of Mongolian Radio and Television

by Davaasuren Santiv MRTBN (Mongolian Radio & Television Broadcasting Network

The mission of the Mongolian Radio and Television Broadcasting Network is to develop and expand the national radio and television network of Mongolia in optimal ways, matching current and future demands of customers; to establish opportunities to deliver all types of radio and television services to the public through updated techniques and technologies; to cover the entire territory of the country with the aim of broadcasting and transmitting multiple channel radio and television programmes at a high technological level; to provide continuous and reliable operation of networks and to introduce new technical innovations.

Organisation

MRTBN employs over 250 engineers and technicians in Ulaanbaatar city and 21 provinces.

In 1960, facilities for a radio programme Broadcast and Receiving Centre were built in Ulaanbaatar and became a starting point for establishing a technically integral network for radio programmes throughout the country.

Central Radio Station

The radio programme broadcasting facility was built in the 1930s and the first radio programme was broadcast on September 1st, 1934. Since the first radio station became operational the development of the service has progressed nationwide.

As a result of three technical upgrades to the radio network, Mongolian National Public Radio programmes are broadcast on a daily basis via three networks, utilising long, medium and short wave. For instance, programmes of the 1st channel are re-transmitted through RNTC, a LW station with a capacity of 500 kWt, located in the Khonkhor area and LW and MW broadcast stations with capacity of 75 kWt in four other towns. The 2nd channel‘s programmes are re-transmitted by SW stations with a capacity of 10- 50 kWt which were built in Ulaanbaatar and two other towns in 2003. The 1st and 2nd channel programmes of Mongolian Radio are then re-transmitted by FM stations located in over 70 town centres.
