protein, with particular emphasis on cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli and cauliflower is cancer protective. The cruciferous vegetables contain sulfur, a potent cancer fighter. Garlic and onion also are helpful in this regard. In addition, lycopene, a carotenoid compound found in naturally red foods such as tomato, water- melon, pink grapefruit and guava, has been shown to protect against prostate cancer and may possibly reduce the size of an existing tumor. People who consume fatty fish, and the omega 3s they provide, have a lower risk of prostate cancer, while genistein, a prominent compound in soybeans, has been shown to inhibit the growth of cancer cells. Genistein may also have additional cancer- fighting properties which require further study. Minerals such as zinc and selenium also are cancer protective, but frequently are inadequate in a typical American diet. Pumpkin seeds and Brazil nuts are a good source of zinc and selenium and make a great daily snack. Green tea is a powerful and tasty antioxidant that may reduce the incidence of prostate cancer. Dairy, on the other hand, may increase the risk of prostate
cancer. Countries with the highest milk consumption have an in- creased incidence of prostate cancer, and some small studies indi- cate that American men who drink the most dairy products have an 11% higher risk. While this may not be a cause and effect relation- ship, it is prudent to avoid an excess of milk-based products. Good dietary habits, exercise and appropriate nutritional supplementation can not only decrease the uncomfortable symp- toms or more serious complications of prostate disorders, but may preclude the need for an invasive and expensive surgical proce- dure.
