brain chemistry, which leads to your anxiety and depression, from your genetics! You can keep taking Lexapro and Prozac, but if you’re not making serotonin because of a bad MTHFR gene, your mood won’t get any better.
Could it be that simple? Have we
discovered a genetic reason for anxiety and depression? The Department of Psychiatry at Harvard University thinks so. They pub- lished a study in 2007 stating, “In the future, screening for MTHFR polymorphisms may be useful [in cases of schizophrenia and depression].” The future is HERE. Your local lab (Quest, Clinical Lab Partners, Lab Corp, etc.) can perform this genetic test and most insur- ance plans cover the cost. The information is invaluable. You can discover a genetic cause to your anxiety or depression. The informa- tion is beneficial, because you can treat your anxiety or depression by taking the bioactive form of folic acid, 5-MTHF, as a supplement. This vitamin has literally changed the lives of patients in my practice. As soon as you take the vitamin that your body can’t make on its own, your brain is flooded with serotonin and other brain chemicals that you may have never felt before! This is not the form of folic acid in your multivitamin, you must take the special methylfolate form. The other gene that we’re concerned about controls the removal of some brain chemicals. Remember, brain chemicals are made, work in the body, and then leave through the urine. If they can’t be processed out, they just build up to higher and higher levels. Sounds like a good thing, but just like Goldilocks, too much isn’t what we want. Some of our brain chemicals are
involved with stress and anger, including adrenaline. Too much adrenaline build- ing up in your brain increases your temper, anger, and can contribute to pediatric and adult ADHD. The enzyme that controls the removal of these is called monoamine oxidase (MAO). There are drugs that stop MAO, called monoamine oxidase inhibi- tors, but these are like SSRI, they keep brain chemicals in the brain. Some people have a genetic problem where they can’t remove adrenaline fast enough. Unfortunately, conventional labs don’t analyze this MAO enzyme, but alternative labs can perform this test. Do you know your blood type? People with blood type O and blood type B have 20% decreased activity of this enzyme, making them more rushed and aggressive. Is being a ‘Type A personality’ genetic? It might be.
Treatment If you’re not happy and you want to be,
you have to change something. Perhaps a change in your diet, perhaps a change in your relationships, maybe a shift in your life expectations, and definitely a genetic analysis.
Start at the core. Have your MTHFR
gene tested. Analyze your brain chemistry by performing a blood or urine neurotransmit- ter test (also available at conventional labs and covered by insurance). Get a nutritional analysis measuring your protein and vitamin status. Once you can clearly see what’s af- fecting your emotions from the inside, you can handle the stress better on the outside. Taking supplemental proteins and vita- mins based on your genetics and your brain chemical level can quickly balance your mood, giving you a fresh outlook on the world. I wish you luck and courage in your journey. Changing your outlook on life can be dramatic and while most of us fear any kind of change, you must have a clear goal defined so that you always have a beacon for yourself.
