The first German online gaming licences have been awarded by rogue state Schleswig Holstein
The first licences to offer online gambling in Germany have been awarded, with UK online betting firm Betfair benefiting from the state of Schleswig Holstein's liberalised gambling rules.
The northern state, whose centre-right coalition government voted in favour of relaxing its gambling laws in September, said that it had awarded seven licences valid to 2018 - Betfair, Germany's Jaxx AG, Tipico, bwin, bet-at-home, Bet365 and the state lottery can now all offer sports betting via the internet.
The other 15 German states have backed more restrictive laws that have been criticised by betting companies, who say they will favour state monopolies. The European Commission has also raised questions over the planned restrictions.

"We view this as a significant positive for the company, given that it further erodes the bear case on the stock that Betfair would be unable to get licensed outside of the UK," the analysts said.
Another 24 applications are still at the Ministry of the Interior for sports betting. 17 companies are trying to get licences for online casinos as well as poker and roulette.
Thunderbird Resorts to expand in Philippines
Thunderbird Resorts is to embark on a P563m expansion for its casino and hotel business inside the Poro Point Freeport Zone in the Philippines in a bid to spur tourism in Northern Luzon.
Sean Thompson, chief gaming officer, said the P348m casino upgrade along with the P215m improvement of the hotel and villas will be completed within the year.
“The growth opportunities in Poro Point and San Fernando City are enumerable considering that we strategically located at the heart of Northern Luzon, where we will hiring over 1,000 local residents. We are happy that our guests are satisfied, as they frequently book for another visit.”
The present 2,000sq.m. casino floor space will add another
thousand along with a three storey, 51-room structure for increased foreign and domestic tourist arrivals. Mr. Thompson said Thunderbird Resorts has bankrolled at least P1.24bn on infrastructure including a 9- hole golf course and P490m for VIP accommodations of gaming clients. He said the gaming firm was confident in teaming up with an airport handling international flights and a seaport for container shipments to support the north quadrant for regional development covering the Ilocos and Cordilleras.
“We will continue to strengthen our partnership with the government agencies and the local governments by infusing added investments in the Freeport zone that could immensely trigger growth beneficial to our host and neighbouring communities,” Mr. Thompson said.
