In recent years thousands of trainees have joined the NI’s training scheme, and the number of certificates issued by the NI has risen steeply. Although the scheme has worked well in the last 30 years, and the requirement for 180 days DP training has been followed by many trainees, the institute has noticed an increase in fraud relating to sea time and documents. The institute is already taking action,
but said Ms Bindao, as with so many issues that this fast-expanding industry faces, a solution can only be found if all sectors of the industry work together to achieve common aims and agree common positions when representing the industry at external fora.
