An innovative ‘walking jack-up barge,’ WaveWalker 1, is being developed by Fugro and Van Oord to operate in rough seas, surf zones, beaches and other intertidal locations. The two companies are working together on the design, construction and operation of the jack-up which is set to begin operating in the field later in 2012 on drilling and blasting works for the Brazilian Suape Outer Channel, a contract recently won by Van Oord. WaveWalker 1 is an innovative jack-up that
aft working deck and has a bow landing platform for personnel transfer. The unit joins a growing number of vessels from Alnmaritec already successfully operating in the region.

Undertaking geotechnical site investigations, drilling and other underwater activity from a stable platform with the added benefit of relocation without floating will reduce the impact of sea conditions on the operational hours required for the Brazilian operations and other harsh coastal areas.

Solstad sells 50 per cent of Normand Oceanic
Solstad Offshore has entered into an agreement with Subsea 7 International Contracting Ltd whereby Subsea 7 will acquire 50 per cent of the CSV Normand Oceanic through purchase of shares in a single purpose company. Normand Oceanic was delivered to Solstad Offshore in April 2011 and commenced a charter with Subsea 7 in March 2012. It has also been agreed that the duration of the firm charter period will be extended from three years to five, on the same commercial terms as in the current charter party. Delivery of the vessels to the new owner is expected to take place during May 2012. The agreed sales price of the vessels is approximately equal to the book value, which is below the value estimates obtained from brokers at year-end.
Accommodation vessels in vogue Fearnley Offshore Supply reports that demand is growing for offshore accommodation vessels. The broker is to publish a report about the subsea market which looks into the accommodation ship market shortly. “These accommodation vessels (whether rigs or monohulls, and also known as floatels), support top-side hook-up and commissioning (HUC), modification and maintenance work on production facilities,” said the broker. “They are a segment which is only a niche in the offshore industry, and it is often overlooked amidst the general focus on drilling rigs and their supporting OSVs and construction vessels.” Fearnley Offshore Supply said the last couple of months had seen an increased focus on this sector. “We have witnessed two newcomers, Sirius Offshore and Sea Accommodation, both announcing their intention to enter the rig side of this segment, Equinox scrambling to raise funds for existing and future operations, and Østensjø presenting a plan to triple their monohull fleet by building two new and larger sisters to Edda Fides,” it said. “At the same time we have seen more offshore construction vessel tonnage cross into this market for seasonal maintenance work on production platforms.
“This influx of monohull tonnage is also helping kill the myth that only semi-submersibles can be used as floating accommodation. We acknowledge that Norway has strict rules and ›››
