Idar Ulstein passes away
Idar Ulstein, former CEO and chairman of the board of Ulstein Group in Norway, passed away on 29 April 2012.
Mr Ulstein played a huge role in the marine industry in Norway, having first joined the company as a 14 year old in 1948. After studying as a naval architect he later re-joined the company as head of design. In 1974, after a merger with Hatlø mechanical workshop, he became CEO of Ulstein Hatlø, and in 1985, when the holding company Ulstein Holding was formed, Mr Ulstein became CEO. In 2007 he resigned as CEO and became chairman. He was chairman until mid- 2011.
Mr Ulstein developed a relatively small company into to a large international group, which at the end of the 1990s had 4,500 employees in more than 30 countries. The company was listed on the stock exchange in 1997.
In 1999 all of the activities of the group,
except shipbuilding, were acquired by Vickers (and later Rolls-Royce). Mr Ulstein continued as chairman of the new Ulstein

Malaysian positioning deal for Veripos Veripos has been awarded a new three-year contract by Kuala Lumpur-based Orogenic Geoexpro for continued provision of GNSS positioning services to the Malaysian company’s fleet of vessels engaged on geophysical surveys, rig moves and major construction support projects throughout Southeast Asia. Services provided by Veripos under the contract include a combination of its dual-beam Standard and Ultra Precise Point Positioning (PPP) facilities supported by shipborne hardware comprising 30 LD3SG1 and 10 LD3G2 integrated mobile receivers. Also available is a series of proprietary software modules for real-time monitoring, control and QC operations.
Coastline Surveys completes decommissioning survey Coastline Surveys Ltd has successfully completed a pre-decommissioning environmental survey on behalf of Energy Resource Technology (UK) Ltd, a division of Helix.
The programme was in preparation for the decommissioning of Camelot CA production platform and associated sub-sea infrastructure, which is located in Block 53/1a of the Southern North Sea.
The work involved geophysical survey utilising high resolution Reson 8125 multibeam and Edgetech sidescan sonar equipment, followed by grab sampling, video and stills camera work at predetermined sites selected, as required under the DECC guidance notes on the Decommissioning of Offshore Oil and Gas Installations and Pipelines under the Petroleum Act 1998 and drill cuttings pile assessment under the OSPAR Recommendation 2006/5. In addition to this, Coastline successfully completed a multi-beam/ROV debris survey, prior to arrival of the Seafox7 jack-up platform. The work was completed by the vessel Flatholm.
Fairstar Heavy Transport rejects Dockwise bid Fairstar Heavy Transport has received, and rejected, an unsolicited, conditional offer from Dockwise to acquire Fairstar shares at a purchase price of NKr 9.3 (US$1.62) per share. The Joint Supervisory and Management Boards of Fairstar have concluded that the conditional offer significantly undervalues the business and has recommended to Fairstar shareholders not to accept the offer.
