progressing with the Marjan, Manifa and Al Hout offshore projects, providing opportunities for OSV operators. Saipem has secured a contract for fabrication, transport and installation of offshore structures on the Marjan and Manifa fields. The contract, signed under a long-term frame agreement with Saudi Aramco, involves construction and installation of four platform jackets and an observation platform weighing a total of 3,300 tonnes. Saipem will perform the offshore work using its derrick lay barge Castoro II in the fourth quarter of this year. Saudi Aramco is expanding the Al Hout field by installing two additional platforms in the third
quarter of 2013, said Mr Main.
“The Manifa (Phase 2) and Marjan developments will have multiple platforms installed that will need a small flotilla of OSVs to service them. The Manifa (Phase 2) development will be using artificial drilling islands, made from gravel, to exploit the field. There will be 27 of these islands, all needing support and supplies,” he added. To support these offshore operations and the drilling rigs it has on hire, Saudi Arabia chartered three anchor handlers from Hadi H Al-Hamman investment company. It chartered two 5,500 bhp vessels – Hadi 23 and Hadi 27
– and 6,000 bhp Hadi 25 for two years, with options to extend these contracts to 2016. Saudi Aramco also extended contracts it had for two 5,150 bhp anchor handlers Ansar 18 and Ansar 19 until the end of 2014, according to Fearnley Offshore shipbrokers. Saipem also
chartered vessels for
supporting its Saudi Arabian operations. The Italian contractor fixed 6,600 bhp anchor handler Britoil 51 and 5,400 bhp Britoil 66 for one year, starting in May, with options to extend the charters by another year. In the UAE, contractor McDermott fixed 5,150 bhp anchor handler Setia Tegap for a month’s work,
RigNet opens new Qatar communications hub
Offshore vessels and rigs operating in the Middle East will be able to connect to a VSAT (very small aperture terminal) satellite communications service after RigNet Inc invested in a new network hub in Doha, Qatar. RigNet is using iDirect’s Evolution hub technology to deploy a Series 15100 universal satellite hub in Qatar. Using

RigNet’s VSAT service can support a wide range of applications that are critical for the
offshore industry, such as broadband data, voice and video communications, as well as real-time data management.
