East Malling and Larkfield Parish Council Boundary Review
The Local Government Boundary Commission is proposing to transfer the south side of the London Road, Larkfield including Walnut Tree Close, into East Malling for borough elections. Voters would have to go to East Malling Village hall to vote for East Malling borough councillors but would still vote for Larkfield parish councillors. The parish council has objected to this split of the original Larkfield village.
Four Acres, East Malling
The parish council has met those opposing the building of extra houses at Four Acres which would take up the small green there as well as demolishing some garages. A meeting with Russet Homes has been sought.
Showman’s Planning Appeal
The public inquiry into the proposed "Showman’s site" off the A228 at Leybourne has been adjourned to September. If passed it would create an area for the storage of fun fair equipment and caravans acting as a base for the applicants. The plans were turned down due to highway concerns and that the land is not zoned for development. Chairman David Thornewell is due to speak for the parish council.
Willow Road Green, Larkfield
The parish has applied for the registration of this area as a village green. Last year it successfully applied for Gighill Green to be given this status with the idea of giving the land long term protection against development, even by future parish councils.
Holy Trinity Church Steps Enquiries are being made for grant aid to provide a
metal handrail up the steps at Holy Trinity Church, Larkfield. The site is in the only Larkfield conservation area and the closed churchyard is a parish responsibility.
Derelict Shops on A20 Permission has been given by the borough council to change the ground floor at 751 to 757 to a takeaway and cafe with maisonettes above. The 19th century building has been vacant for several years. It once housed a Kemlaw catering shop plus florists and was originally Kemps drapers with Mitchells grocery next door. The conditions include keeping the frontage ragstone wall, protecting the trees with a TPO,and providing a car park in the former garden. The conversion is intended to keep the character of the red brick building.
Footpath from New Hythe Lane to Larkfield Road KCC is being asked to keep this path in better order and to keep growth cut back. A copy of the order when it was diverted has been requested to see if the width is defined.
Clare Lane 30mph limit
The council is supporting the efforts of County Cllr Trudy Dean for a 30mph limit along Winterfield Lane, Lucks Hill and Clare Lane. It is intended this should be paid for from her local member highway fund.
Playing Field Wall
Quotes are being sought to repair the wall in Mill Street that forms part of East Malling playing field boundary. The council wants to repair to match the original including the red bricks along the top.
Using the parts that others throw out
EAST Malling-based firm Loop Computer Reuse is now working with Microsoft to supply refurbished computers to people on low incomes and with disabilities.
The not-for-profit community interest company, which is located at East Malling Enterprise Estate, New Road, is committed to providing affordable computers to local communities so that everyone can benefit from the internet.
It reuses equipment that people no longer require and aims to use all the IT waste that is collected. Only the parts that cannot possibly be re-used are recycled in an environmentally friendly way and nothing goes to landfill.
Loop now employs two members of the community who have disabilities and will be recruiting another in the near future. The company is proud of its achievements and believes that its business model can be used in other places.
Future projects include a work placement from Barnardos.
With a newly-designed website, Loop also continues to work closely with schools offering them free collection and disposal services. As funds become available, the company hopes to employ more members of the community for its new warehouse in Maidstone.
