School ‘making progress’ Cash machine

AYLESFORD School and Sports College is addressing improve- ments suggested at its last Of- sted inspection. In 2010 the school was asked

to raise attainment in English and maths, and improve the con- sistency of teaching. After a recent monitoring

visit, the inspectors said student attainment on entry to the school was very low. Since 2010, interventions including extra support in English and maths meant 35% of year 11 students achieved at least fiveA to C GCSE grades. This was a marked improvement, but still well below national figures. Pupils were said to be making satisfactory progress in GCSE

Here for the beer THE annual real ale festival will be held on the Cricket Meadow, Snodland, on June 30. Snodland All Stars will be playing a Twenty20 cricket match against a team of stu- dents, parents and staff from Holmesdale Community Col- lege in the afternoon, followed by music from Hobo Jones and theJunkyardDogsinthe evening. The bar will be open from

noon until 9.30pm, and there will be a dozen tasty beers and ciders to try.

subjects overall, although there wasmarked variation. Students found to be underachieving were being targeted. The quality of teaching was

only satisfactory, and in some cases inadequate. Tasks were not varied according to pupils’ ability so that more able stu- dents were not challenged. The development of basic

skills was at early stages. Stu- dents were encouraged to read during mentor sessions, which, together with literacy and nu- meracy challenges and master classes, were leading to greater awareness of the need to de- velop these skills. However, students did not show good knowledge of

spelling, paragraphing and punctuation, and handwriting and neatness were varied. The school had made progress

in implementing homework, with after-school study areas. Planners and a homework timetable meant more pupils submitted homework regularly. Pupils were said to be courte-

ous and well-behaved, but tended to misbehave when lessons were not absorbing. High levels of exclusions were reducing and attendance had im- proved.

Changes in staffing had af-

fected GCSE results, but greater staffing stability and tracking of students’ achievements were showing signs of improvement.
