Tribute proposed for Crimea hero
ATRIBUTE plinth and plaque in memory of Captain Lewis Nolan has been proposed for the fore- court of the former Kent County Opthalmic and Aural Hospital, Church Street, Maidstone. Captain Nolan was the com- mander and riding master at the Maidstone Cavalry Depot and died in 1854, aged 36, while in charge of the Light Brigade at the Battle of Balaclava. He was one of the first casualties of that

Mayor driving force for charities MAYOR Brian Luker took to the track at Buckmore Park karting centre in an event that raised over £1,000 for charities. Twenty-six teams of three competed in a 90-minute endurance race organisedbyCllr Luker, the outgoingMayor of Tonbridgeand Malling. Cash boost for hospital drivers
VOLUNTEER car services, often used by elderly people to get to and from non-emergency hospital appointments, are to get extra funding from Maidstone and TunbridgeWells NHS Trust. The trust will provide £60,000 to groups providing transport over
the next three years to help them offset their costs. Groups are in- vited to apply to the trust for a share of the cash via the trust’s web- site

Squash squeeze SQUASH courts at Larkfield Leisure Centre are to be con- verted into a dance studio. A report to Tonbridge and Malling Council said the courts had only 65% usage during peak times. However, the exist- ing dance studios could not keep up with demand.
The idea was agreed in princi- ple in January, and following consultation, a final report was to be considered on May 14.
