Bright Sparks School’s Out

Poppy Jamie, 21

Reporter/ Presenter ITN St Edward’s Oxford, Oxfordshire

Poppy Jamie is a successful freelance presenter and reporter for ITN and 4music while continuing to study at the London School of Economics. Last year a project took her to Buckingham Palace to talk to supporters camping out for the Royal Wedding, and in April she stole a moment with Ewan McGregor on the red carpet at the premiere of Salmon Fishing in the Yemen (2012). She comments that her highlight so far was reporting from The Cannes Film Festival 2010 for Finches Quarterly online, Hellomagazine. com and Cinemoi Sky Channel. Her career began in 2009 as she interviewed stars backstage at the MOBO awards; since then Poppy has conducted live, on camera, interviews at numerous exclusive events. This is, however, not enough to fill the time of this enthusiastic self-starter who began her own merchandising business at the age of 16 and years later created her own careers TV show at LSE. If Poppy was to give one piece of advice it would be: “Don’t rely on your contacts, rely on yourself”.

George Burgess, 19

St Paul’s School, London Entrepreneur

George Burgess, Managing Director and sole founder of EducationApps Ltd, a mobile app development company, set up the business whilst in his final year at school. Two years on he is on the verge of launching nearly 200 new apps for Common Entrance, GCSE, AS and A level, IB and undergraduate revision – available on Apple, Blackberry, and Android. With BBC Active he is producing nine BBC Bitesize apps. George’s idea evolved when he realised that there was a gap on the App Store for educational apps, particularly for GCSE. He found a freelancer abroad to code the product and a teacher at school helped to write the content. The success of his first app for Geography GCSE saw the birth of EducationApps Ltd. George was not new to the game; in 2007 he founded a business with a classmate creating DVDs for school events, expanding to six London schools. His passion for business has not diminished.

Lucy Alexander, 21

Kilgraston School, Perthshire Jumps jockey

Lucy Alexander is Scotland’s only female professional jumps jockey and has won 35 races in her first season – beating the previous record of 28 wins by a female jockey in one season (1980). Lucy has worked for leading Flat Trainers Aidan O’Brien, Kevin Ryan and Sir Michael Stoute and this led her to ride with a number of top jockeys including Kieren Fallon, helping to hone her style. Riding was in her blood and her childhood: her father Nick is a trainer, uncle Jamie an amateur jockey and brother Kit a point-to-point jockey. She rode her first racehorse at 12-years-old and Kilgraston School’s equestrian facilities allowed her to ride every day. A highlight was competing at the Cheltenham Festival (2012). Lucy is not fazed by the male dominated sport; after all she is living her dream!
