Dancing in the aisles Morpeth set to swing at jazz festival
ANGUS MCDONALD J
azz fans from all over the region are about to descend on Morpeth for a three-day festival that will have attendees dancing in the
aisles. After the previous Morpeth jazz
festival had to wind down in 2004 due to logistical diffi culties and rising insurance costs, the Catholic, Uniting and Anglican churches came together to revive the idea.
In the four years since its inception in
2009, the new Chapel Jazz festival has gone from strength to strength. Organiser Charles Pope said the
festival was great for the community. “T e Chapel Jazz festival is a fantastic advertisement for Morpeth,” he said
“It is a unique jazz festival that makes
the most out of our charming buildings and location. “T e aim of Chapel Jazz is to present
traditional jazz in a welcoming environment to jazz lovers and their families and provide an enjoyable community experience.” Beginning this Friday, the festival will
bring the Hunter’s best jazz performers together, alongside Sydney-based Geoff Bull’s Olympia Jazz Band, fresh from an international tour. T e festival will use the three churches’
facilities for all shows across the weekend with an additional performance by Geoff Bull’s Olympia Jazz Band at the Commercial Hotel on Saturday night. Mr Pope expected a big crowd to show
up for this year’s events. “We are initially expecting about 500
or so, but if the weather is good we will see well over that fi gure. “All the events are free outside of
Friday night’s dinner dance at St James’ Anglican Church, so we hope people turn up and have a great time.”.
