ake Macquarie artist Deanne Newland is all smiles after taking out fi rst place in the colour photography section
of the Dobell Festival of Art, Craft and Photography. Ms Newland won the competition and
received a cheque for $300 for her entry depicting the Catherine Hill Bay coal loader at sunrise. If that wasn’t enough, Ms Newland also
snared second place in the black and white category for her entry Pop and Josie on Anzac Day. “I’m just absolutely chuff ed with both
prizes,” she said. “T ere were about 30 entries across
both categories and there was some pretty amazing photography, so it was a real surprise to win. “I really like the Catherine Hill Bay coal loader picture because it’s very

moody, and the black and white photo holds particular resonance with me because it’s a photo of my grandfather, who passed away recently, wearing his war medals, with my daughter.” Ms Newland, who runs the Artistic
Soul art school at Swansea, said while she worked in a variety of artistic mediums, photography had always been her consuming passion. “I just love
photography,” she said. “While I also
work in mediums such as painting and illustration, photography has always been my main focus and I’m just over the moon with the win.”
