The number of Cornish sportsmen and women taking part in this year’s Olympics is likely to be the highest since the summer games of 1908, which were also hosted by London. On that occasion, Cornwall fielded the entire


Rugby Union team in a one-match tournament against Australasia, represented by Australia, after the Olympic champions, France, withdrew. The Wallabies, who were already visiting England, had earlier beaten Cornwall, the British county champions, at Camborne, and they repeated that feat with a 32-3 victory in the White City Stadium. Only one silver medal was awarded for the team and the Cornish players drew lots for it, with Thomas ‘Chicky’Wedge being the lucky winner. His medal has been on display at the St Ives RFC’s clubhouse ever since. Just three other silver medals have been won

Great Britain’s top Olympic sailor, Ben Ainslie, grew up in Cornwall and went to Launceston College and Truro School


Truro and Launceston colleges pupil Ben Ainslie made his Olympic debut in the Laser sailing class as a 19-year-old rookie. Gold has now become his preferred jewel with successive victories in the Laser class in Sydney (2000) and in the heavier and larger Finn dinghy at both Athens (2004) and Beijing (2008).The Restronguet (River Fal) Sailing Club and Royal Cornwall Yacht Club (Falmouth)
