From gigs in quiet Cornish rivers to the World stage


The new Dorney Lake rowing complex, between Eton and Windsor, will be the focus for two Cornish girls, former Pilot Gig rower Annabel Vernon, from St Minver, near Wadebridge – a silver medallist in Beijing – and Penzance’s Helen Glover, who are both in this season’s Great Britain World Cup squads which, they hope, will also lead to Olympic calls. Glover, (26), a relative latecomer to the sport, is


now a member of the Minerva Bath club, while 29-year-old Vernon, who used to row for the River Fowey club of Castledore, represents the famous Leander these days. Ever a proud Cornish girl, the blades of her


training sculls are emblazoned with the black and white colours of St Piran and she has often been known to carry the Cornish flag on to medal podiums. Horse riders hoping to trek from Cornwall to Capital Games glory include former Penzance rider Lucy Wiegersma, (35), whose

horses are usually bred by Christopher and Sarita Perkins, of Mylor, near Falmouth.


But the London Olympics could be just a tad too soon for North Cornwall windsurfers Izzy Hamilton, (20), from Bude, and teenagers Sam, (18), and 15-year-old twins Sacha and Imogen Sills, from Launceston, who have all made great strides up the National rankings ladder but for whom Rio de Janeiro, in four years’ time, is probably a more likely Olympic ticket.
