Life, Health & Home The Dog Days Of Summer
SEBASTOPOL, CA. ~ The dog days of summer are here, although our pets may find them uncomfortable. Dogs and cats have different cool-
ing air for them and a mister, or better yet, bring them into the coolest part of the house.
How to cool a hot pet
• Take them to a shaded or air conditioned area.
• Run cool, not iced, water over them, especially neck, chest and groin
• Offer small amounts of cool water
Signs your pet may be in trouble; call and/or take to your vet or nearest emergency clinic
• Rapid breathing and heart rate
• Staggering ing systems from ours; we
sweat all over, which is a pretty efficient cooling system in most circumstances; dogs and cats “sweat” through the pads on their feet and their tongue, which is far less effi- cient. Below are some tips to help insure a happy and safe summer for all. Never leave your pet in the car unattended, whether it’s a quick trip to the mar- ket or a weekend getaway. Automobiles act like a green- house, trapping heat inside. Even parked in the shade with the windows down, with the outside temperature in the low 70s, your car can heat up to 102 degrees in 10 minutes, and 120 degrees in 30 min- utes. If you can’t sit in the car wearing a warm sweater, than it’s too warm for your pet. Provide plenty of shade and
fresh cool water. If humidity is high, and/or it is warmer than 92 degrees, provide mov-

• Non responsive to your voice
Go ahead, have fun in the sun, and shade, with your pet, just remember, he is depending on you to keep him safe, cool, and happy!

It is a success story like Jordon’s that makes working with dyslexic young people completely worth it. Beneath all of the complica- tion, shame, struggle, and behav- ior
issues these young people
suffer, they are intelligent, cre- ative, motivated, and immensely talented human beings. I have the very fortunate job of helping to unlock all that potential! 21st Annual Sonoma County Medical Alliance Garden Tour
SANTA ROSA, CA. ~ From its humble beginnings 21 years ago, the Sonoma County Medical Alliance Garden Tour has blos- somed into a formidable fund raising event for better health in Sonoma County. Up to now almost 1 million
dollars
has been raised and we expect to top that in 2012! Proceeds this year will go to 8 non profit organiza- tions throughout Sonoma County to provide men- tal health services for Perinatal women, children and teens, and seniors. Treating mental illness before it becomes severe and entrenched, or intervening early in the case of trauma and abuse, has significant impact in improv- ing quality
of life, parenting
skills, family and societal rela- tionships, and helping individu- als reach their full potential –all of which makes for a healthier, and safer community.
