8 THE FIRST INTERNATIONAL SCULPTURE SYMPOSIUM IN BELIZE SCULPTING BY PATRICIA AINSLIE
This symposium was proposed, initiated and managed by Jock Hildebrand and organized by the National Institute of Culture and History (NICH), Belize.
The theme of the symposium was Belize at 30 – Sculpting the Vision in celebration of the 30th
granted on September 21, 1981.
Between November 12 and December 10, 2011 six international sculptors produced monumental works in limestone.
The sculptors who participated are; Colin Figue from England/Portugal, Roland Mayer from Germany, Petre Petrov from Bulgaria, Caroline Ramersdorfer from Austria, Canan Zöngür from Turkey, and Florin Strejac from Romania.
These international symposia afford sculptors the opportunity to work on a very large scale within a very tight time-frame. A beautiful white limestone was sourced for this project from the quarry at Pine Ridge, near Belmopan in central Belize. The sculptors were assisted by young artists from Belize for whom this was a unique opportunity to gain valuable experience working side-by-side the experienced international sculptors.
Carving stone is hard physical work and over the four weeks, the sculptors reduced the initial fifteen ton stones to less than seven tons, cutting away the stone until the forms emerged to express their concepts.
Caroline Ramersdorfer
In this edition we will feature two of these sculptors, Colin Figue and Caroline Ramersdorfer. The other sculptors will be featured in future editions.
