Sculpting since she was a teenager and a student at Lincoln High School in Brooklyn, Antar typically works at all hours of the day and night. In contrast to the order of her home and the gallery-like quality of her living room where she rotates her favorite pieces, her studio houses 20,000 pounds of stone, and the unusual tools of her trade (including heavy drills that seem far too bulky for the slight Antar to lift, much less sculpt with).
She sculpts both objects that catch her fancy and commissioned pieces that can range from one’s favorite pair of clothes to a family heirloom (e.g. a tallis, or Jewish prayer cloth). Her work can be found in many homes and private collections, including that of U.S. Senator Charles Schumer.
In addition to her collection of iconic Americana known as ‘Realism in Stone,’ she has also created many abstract works from various stones including onyx, honey-cone Calcite, limestone, watermelon marble, VT marble, Yule marble and others. The abstract works are a reflection of her experiences combined with emotion. The collection includes, such pieces as ‘The Thinker’, ‘Undoing the Knot’, ‘Him and Her’, ‘Conversations’, and ‘Mother and Child,’ among others.
“The work is physically demanding and the fine detail requires an immense amount of focus and time,” said Antar, who has also developed a clientele for another aspect of her work,
Judaic ceremonial artwork. “The money and the recognition are nice, but you do this for love.”
Over the years Ms. Antar’s works have been featured in museum exhibitions including: Jane Voorhees Zimmerli Art Museum, Rutgers University, New Brunswick, N.J.; The Really Big Shoe Show, City Museum, St. Louis, M.O.; The Millennium Exhibition, The Alternative Museum, New York, N.Y.; From Celestial to Earthly: Exploring The Environment through Ourselves, Paterson Museum, Paterson, N.J.; and Provincetown Art Association and Museum, Provincetown, M.A., among others.
She’s also been featured in solo exhibitions and hundreds of group exhibitions at venues across the country including museums, galleries, art shows, corporate offices, public gardens, hospitals and universities.
Antar’s works have also appeared in the windows of famous Madison Avenue apparel stores, as well as private collections of the New York’s cognoscenti. She recently sold her work of sculpted “footwear” to Atlanta-based collector and philanthropist Todd Zeldin. She has been featured in myriad national and local newspapers and magazines, and in coast-to-coast broadcasts on TV and radio including Pop Culture Radio, with Chris Wakefield. Several videos of Ms. Antar appear on GeoBeats, and her “Knots Sculpture” interview can be seen on YouTube at:
