CONTENTS EDITORIAL WHERE IS YOUR MASK?

Last week a friend and colleague of mine died. Tracie was a glass sculptor part time and an arts administrator full time. Tracie died of cancer which  metastasized into her brain.

Five months after her diagnosis she died. Tracy believed it came from   she was not terribly careful about protecting herself. It is easy to be careless in the studio. Why put on that dust mask when you know you want to grind on that piece of  What happens of course is you grind away for much longer. At least that is what I used to do. Six years ago I had a persistent cough. My doctor  there were some spots on my lung. A subsequent CT scan showed nothing. I had been carless with my dust mask in my foundry. I suspect it was bronze dust that had been coughed out by the time I had the scan.

Since then I have been scrupulous in terms of  and lungs. It really takes little time to put safety equipment on. It did not take long to make it a habit. So I urge everyone to be so careful when you are working in the studio. Don’t put yourselves in the position where you have a scare … or worse.

The studio can be a dangerous place. Take a look around and  to make it safer. Make sure you are aware of hazardous materials; store them properly. And know where and what they are.

Make sure all rigging is safe when working with heavy material. And please… wear your dust mask religiously.
