Colin Figue was inspired by Smoking Mirror - prince and divine ruler at Lamanai 8th-9th AD.


Born in England in 1943, Figue studied at the Ravensbourne College of Art and Design and graduated with an MA from the Royal Academy School of Sculpture in London in 1969. After travelling widely in the Middle East, Africa, and South America, and some years spent as a journeyman, he was awarded a British Council scholarship and he elected to work in the marble quarries in the Alentejo province of Portugal where he found a very high quality stone for making sculpture. Subsequently he settled in southern Portugal, where he founded his Lightyears sculpture studio and began to build his working base in the Portimao area. In recent years he has travelled widely in India and worked in the temple workshops of Mahabalipuram in Tamil Nadu where the age-old practices of working with hand tools and with superb facility and technical ability maintain and connect with the roots of sculpture.


Figue has attended previous international sculpture symposia around the world, in Germany, Slovakia, Lebanon, Japan, China, Guatemala and India. He was drawn to Belize due to his long-time interest in Mayan culture, which he was exposed to as a young student. He had first
