Geography Fieldtrip to Swanage GEOGRAPHICAL SKILLS and

knowledge were put into action dur- ing a recent visit to the stunning Juras- sic Coastline on the Dorset south coast. Having endured freezing temperatures only

a few weeks earlier, the group of Year 10 and 11 students were all hoping and pray- ing for better weather during the 1st week- end of March. So we were very lucky to get glorious sunshine on that weekend which allowed the students to enjoy the spectacu- lar coastal scenery, in and around Swanage.

World Heritage Status

Students were able to see for themselves how physical and human pro- cesses interact with each other, and how this coastline is being managed in order to main- tain its World Heritage Status. As well as en- joying the beautiful landscapes and reinforc- ing their case study knowledge of Dorset’s coastline, students had ample opportunity to develop their interpersonal skills and en- gage in some lIvely discussion and debate.

Year 10 genuinely inspired by Cambridge University

IN JANUARY I took five Year 10 students on an aspirational visit to Cambridge University. Despite the early start and finish it was with- out doubt one of the most enjoy- able and heart-warming experi- ences for me, on trips of this nature.

The genuine excitement and contagious en- thusiasm displayed by the students was obvious to everyone; in particular, Vishnuga Raveen- dran was bursting at the seams with questions!

Expectation prospects and kudos The Cambridge team of ambassadors got

the mix just right by way of information, the courses, the expectation, and the experience of living in one of England’s most charming towns. Then there are the career prospects and the kudos that goes with any gradu- ate from this high achieving establishment. Vishnuga, Steffi Mendes, Barinder- jit Minhas, Mohite Navinchandra and Dhamen Khanna are a credit to the school.

Read their stories of the day in the annual school magazine due out in the summer!

Sebastian Conran inspires Villiers Art and Design students

STUDENTS participating in the University of West London’s Satur- day art and design club have been experiencing many different aspects of the world of art and design, sup- ported and facilitated by expertise from many different disciplines.

The spring term did not disappoint

with the culmination of an unprec- edented invitation by designer Sebas- tian Conran, son of Jasper – the founder of home design chain store Habitat, to attend a masterclass in design at his West London studio in Kensington. Sebastian is the managing director of

his design company, Sebastian Con- ran Associates, designs for department store chain John Lewis, writes articles, books, and papers on design as well as teaches at the Royal College of Art.

Challenging the norm Students Ilham Hussein, Amaani

Ahmed and Kunmi Oladaje were highly impressed with the experience, and Sebastian himself was particularly im- pressed with the design ideas Kunmi produced on the day which ‘challenged the norm’. The students’ work was ex- hibited at the PM Gallery in Walpole Park in Ealing for a week in early March which was called This Time:This Place as a direct response to exhibition The Near and the Elsewhere to consider what it means for them to live life in ur- ban London in tough economic times.

Final exhibition at Somerset House Please give your support and praise

Eight minute marathons Modelled on the ‘speed-dating’

principle, students selected the careers they wanted to know more about, and met over 60 top professionals from over 30 industries including medicine, journalism; PR and advertising, investment banking & trading and music production. Entrepreneur- ship, acting, fashion design, accoun- tancy and law were especially popular. The event was professionally filmed
