Genus, the Basingstoke-based world leader in applying science to animal breeding, creating advances through biotechnology and selling added value products for livestock farming, was one of the top performers in the February table of the region´s share price movements.
Revenue was up 9% to £166.9 million, bovine sales volumes were 8% higher with strong increases in China and India, and porcine volumes were up 13% driven by growth in Asia. The adjusted operating profit was up 7% to £23m .
Chief executive Karim Bitar commented: "Genus has continued to perform well and it is pleasing to see strong growth in emerging markets. Global population growth and increased urbanisation in developing countries is accelerating demand for protein in diets. This demand increase and pressure on prices, driven by higher feed costs,
can only be met through improved efficiency and greater application of technology in farming. Genus' market-leading genetics are key ingredients in this quest for improved productivity."
Oxford Technology VCT plc, the manager of a £30m specialist fund in early-stage technology companies in the UK, was the star performer of the month with a 57% rise in the section featuring smaller companies.
The board announced it has sold its stake in one of its investee companies, Meciria, with OT4 receiving an initial cash consideration of £2.2m and additional considerations possible over the next four years depending on Meciria’s performance. The effect of the initial cash consideration was to increase the net asset value of OT4 by 14.6 pence per share.

The new one-day professional courses and Foundation Degree in Venue Management have been developed as a result of managers throughout the country calling for a professional qualification that will promote continuing professional development (CPD) as well as recognise the wide range of disciplines involved in the venue management profession.
Teresa Moore, head of department, music and event management at Bucks, said: “The courses take the principles of work-based learning and apply them to a wide range of disciplines including event management, health and safety issues and commercial administration.
“The Foundation Degree is a two-year programme, and to achieve the BSc (Hons) will require a further year’s study. We are also enabling students to take individual modules, through attendance at University workshops and work- based learning, to maintain their CPD.”
Director of the UKVMA, Neil Levett, added: “This is the biggest ever change in the way that venue management is recognised and understood in this country. We have some of the world’s most prestigious venues managed by people who have spent their careers in the industry, and now they can be recognised for their knowledge and professionalism.”
The first year of the Foundation Degree covers legislation and regulations, such as health and safety, employer liability and finance, including budgeting and cashflow, as well as an introduction to venue management. Year two covers such subjects as negotiation and communication, logistics and planning, application of technology and event management.
Those who choose to progress to the BSc (Hons) will go on to study security and crowd management, sustainability strategies, risk management and work-based projects, and have the opportunity to carry out their own research. There is also an option to study stadium and arena management.
Teresa Moore continued: “The University has built an enviable reputation for its innovative work-based courses in events management, crowd and security management and music management, and has been at the forefront of working with sectors of the events industry to provide professional training and education in areas which are newly professionalising. The new professional courses and degree that we have developed with the UKVMA for venue managers perfectly complements our existing courses and expertise.”
