Blandy & Blandy stage mock employment tribunal

Thames Valley based law firm Blandy & Blandy is staging a mock employment tribunal at the University of Reading on Wednesday April 18 which will focus on employment status and will demonstrate how a tribunal works in practice.

While the Agency Workers Regulations 2010 have introduced new rights and obligations in relation to many non-permanent workers, the use of ‘temps’, casual staff and contractors continues to be popular. It is crucial that companies understand the often blurred line between worker and employee and the employment rights that such workers enjoy. Without careful and continuous monitoring, companies can find themselves embroiled in complex employment claims, presented against them by temporary workers alleging that they

are, in reality, employees with wider reaching employment protection.

Blandy & Blandy’s employment team has an excellent reputation for advising organisations in the private and public sectors on avoiding tribunal claims, dealing with them if they do arise, restructuring and TUPE matters. Independent guides to the legal profession state the advice the team gives is “highly rated” adding "their attention to detail is outstanding". The team is also extremely well regarded for its advocacy skills before tribunals and courts.

Sue Dowling, partner and head of the employment team at Blandy & Blandy, said: “Companies which use temporary workers but have not recently reviewed the issues and complexities that can arise in

relation to employment status and the potential rights of the people they are engaging should attend the mock tribunal. As well as covering tribunal practices and procedures, the event will involve guidance on how to protect against employment claims in the first place.

"Last year’s mock tribunal was very successful with many people learning how an employment tribunal works in practice and the necessary steps to consider before claims arise. I hope this year will be just as successful. I would also like to thank the University of Reading for allowing us to use their premises for this event.”

The mock tribunal is free to attend and will take place at the University of Reading on Wednesday April 18 starting at 8.45am and finishing at 1pm. Places are limited and last year’s event was fully booked so to reserve a place please email the name, position, and contact details of those who would like to attend to events@blandy.co.uk putting Mock Tribunal in the subject line.
