Penningtons Solicitors LLP has opened a new office in Guildford as a result of the growth of its business in Surrey
The London and south east law firm now occupies the prestigious Bishop’s Wharf development opposite the main line station. Its decision to establish a base here reflects ongoing expansion across all parts of the practice meaning that it has outgrown the accommodation available at its existing Godalming base.
Penningtons’ corporate, employment and commercial property teams, including partners Simon Bickerdike (corporate), David Kendall (corporate), Mike Cole (employment), Stephen Law (commercial property) and Mike Busby (commercial property), have relocated to the new office in a move which enables them to be closer to their clients in the business community. The rest of the firm’s practice, including the private client, clinical negligence, personal injury, travel and residential property groups, will continue to operate from Godalming.
Penningtons acts for a wide variety of organisations in and around Guildford, ranging from start-ups to major multi-nationals. During the past 12 months it has focused on enhancing its services for businesses in the area both organically and through a number of key hires, including the recruitment of David Kendall from Stevens and Bolton and Tim Randles from Laytons. The partnership is recognised by The Legal 500, considered to be the authoritative voice of the legal industry, as one of the top law firms in the south east.

Commenting on the opening of the new office, Penningtons’ managing partner David Raine said: “This is an exciting step which reaffirms our commitment to our practice in Surrey and ensures that we are assisting our corporate clients from the centre of their activities. We have already received strong support for our new base from existing contacts, intermediaries and the wider business community and look forward to establishing stronger links with them over the coming months.
“We are delighted that the expansion of our practice over the last year, both in Surrey and throughout the firm, is expected to lead to an increase in turnover of over 30%, bringing total fee income for 2011-2012 to £32 million. This latest move will provide a further platform
for sustainable growth following an extremely positive year for us, despite the difficult economic climate.”
In addition to establishing a permanent presence in Guildford, Penningtons also opened an office in Cambridge in March. The new venture sees the corporate and employment lawyers from Charles Russell’s Cambridge team join Penningtons, increasing the number of partners at the firm to 68, with 360 staff in total. It also means that Penningtons has grown its partner headcount by over 30% in the past year.
