Apart from utilising proven algorithms and corrections, automated filters (CUBE, Statistical and IHO), plus area based editing, CARIS has also incorporated Water Column Image processing. With water column data you'll be able to extract even more qualitative information from your sonar to reduce the number of run lines and save time and money in your survey operations. HIPS and SIPS 7.1.1 allows you to analyse water column data directly in 3D and 2D without the need for additional software.

SMD has secured the first and second sales of the new Atom WROV system.


The Atom is an ultra-compact Work Class ROV, comparable in size to top end electric ROVs but providing the customer with true Work Class capability. The system is suitable for drill support, IRM, survey and light construction duties and can be mobilised on vessels and rigs with limited deck space. Designed with ease of operation and maintenance in mind, Atom boasts the latest DVECSII distributed control system with graphical displays and pilot aids coupled to proven Curvetech™

The first Atom system to be sold was ordered by Allied Marine and Equipment (AME) of Malaysia. Albert Michael, AME’s Technical and Operations Director stated: “The purchase of AME’s first Atom system represents a major milestone in the evolution of AME as a fully integrated offshore services provider, raising the profile of ROV services within the suite of services offered to our clients. It is planned to use the Atom straight from delivery to support projects for major clients in the South East Asia region.” Only two weeks after the first Atom order a second was placed by a Mediterranean based subsea contractor, who will use the Atom to support underwater laying and protection operations in various worldwide projects.


SMD has also entered into a partnership with SeeByte, as of early 2012. The two companies will work together to develop advanced control algorithms for remotely operated vehicle systems, building on SMD’s experience with its Distributed Vehicle Control System and drawing in SeeByte’s expertise with products such as SeeTrackCoPilot. Having successfully worked together in the past to deliver the world’s first mid-water DP application for rock-dumping on behalf of the Jan De Nul Group, the companies agreed to enter a partnership which will provide benefits for SMD customers, delivering enhanced vehicle control for ROV conducted subsea tasks.


Once again the Society of Maritime Industries is undertaking the fourth iteration of the annual trends survey of the UK marine science and technology industry at Oceanology International 2012. Seen as a key indicator of how the industry has performed over the previous year, the survey also provides a view of where the industry expects to develop its business in the future. Last year’s survey showed the industry turnover to be over £1.1 billion per annum and 63% had increased their staff numbers at a time when many other sectors were shrinking their workforce. Moreover, business outlook was highly positive with 65% of companies experiencing growth in the past 12 months and over 70% of companies predicting growth over the next 12 months. This is a remarkable performance in the current economic climate and it will be interesting to see if this sense of optimism has continued into 2012.
