Nick Farmer describes his day out


actually no, I sneaked off to visit Fantasy of Flight an hour down the road in Tampa, to indulge my love of old aeroplanes. There are Mustangs and a Mitchell, a Sunderland and a Spitfi re, a Focke Wulf and a Ford Trimotor – more than 40 aircraft in immaculate concourse condition, most of them airworthy, all presented in a won-


derful art deco hangar facility. Some lucky visitors were taking pleasure fl ights in a fi ve-seater open-cockpit 1920s Standard.


MUSTANG ALLY Fantasy of Flight is owned and operated by Kermit Weeks, a world champion aero- batic pilot and collector of fabulous fl ying machines. A man with a fi ne moustache and ponytail to match, he has built up a truly wonderful collection of historic aircraft, pretty much all of which he has fl own. On the day I was there, he fl ew his Grumman Wildcat, a Grumman Duck and
