Growing up, I remember many a time during one-on-one conversations with Grandma Browne when she would recite a litany of her grandchildren’s names before she finally zeroed in on mine. Sometimes, she would simply ask: “Now, what’s your name?” Anyone within earshot would just smile and chuckle. She loved to tell jokes. Sometimes she would get so involved in enhancing a story

that she’d forget how to word the punch line. It didn’t matter. Her version always made us giggle.

I can relate, can you? I can remember phone numbers from 20 years ago, but what was the name of the movie with those great actors that I saw yesterday? It was good though, right? Oh my ….. I have become my grandmother!

As a Baby Boomer, I still qualify as a man of “a certain age,” as one wit put it, nowhere near yet becoming a man of “an uncertain age.” Still, I’m definitely connecting with this month’s theme of Healthy Mind. Thanks to writer Lisa Marshall’s reality check, we know we’re not alone; even better, there are things we can do starting right now to counter memory loss. Our feature article, “A Brain-Building Blueprint” is right on the mark for me, and I hope it is helpful to you; if not now, perhaps the perspective shared will help a loved one or nour- ish your future journey.

The blueprint shares super tips for keeping the ol’ thinker sharp and fresh, or at least giving it every opportunity to do what it used to do and is supposed to do. What works for you? I’ve discovered that I think more clearly in the morn- ing, especially after doing cardio breathing exercises, and also when I eat better. Science says our brains typically shrink 1 percent annually, beginning in midlife. Before hitting the panic button, check out page 16 and challenge your- self to activate good advice from the experts. Let me know how you are doing!

You will find many thoughtful articles in this issue of Natural Awakenings, including a look at how relationships affect our mental and emotional health. Valentine’s Day poses a prime opportunity to bank some good memories with loved ones beyond that special someone. Applying my new resolution to live more in the present moment, I plan to do just that.

According to Eckhart Tolle, living in the now is the truest path to happiness and enlightenment. It is a simple mind-challenge, and makes life much more fun and pleasurable. Grandma would approve.

To this present moment, Jeff Browne, Publisher
