Our columnist’s quest to discover the perfect winter make-up trend

“I

admit colour was never my fi rst choice in make-up. I used to wear safe, subtle shades, which I quickly became bored of – even

though they worked well. I was also scared to try bold colours – being so set in my routine I didn’t want to draw undue attention to myself. Being brought up to believe that wearing bright clothes or make-up was for stage performers didn’t help, either! It wasn’t until I was passing the beauty fl oor of a large department store that my eyes were drawn to the beautiful display of colour palettes around me – for the fi rst time I saw a technicolour world of beauty products! I decided to sample some of the palettes and was amazed to see the effect the colours had on my skin and overall look. From that point on I invested in eyeshadow, lipstick and nail varnish in as many bold colours as I could – and I’ve never looked back.

What I’ve learnt “Black skin shows off colour so well that we should all celebrate, binning the safe options and getting involved with new colours on the block. However, you should never assume what works for one person will work for you. Our skintone is unique so we need to select colours that complement our individual complexion. Lighting affects colours, too – some might look good during the day but under artifi cial lighting might not appear the same. And don’t be afraid to experiment! The secret is to

mix and match bright colours together. Blue, green and orange sounds outrageous but can look damn hot!

What to try “There are some great make-up products out there that offer a spectrum of shades to suit all complexions. I love Sleek Makeup, which prides itself on being extremely trend-savvy and with a particular focus on black women. Try their Acid i-Divine Eyeshadow Palette, which offers a fusion of bright colours from pinks to greens and plums. When it comes to nails, opt for Nails Inc’s gorgeous range – I love the shades Porchester Place and Carnaby Street. And don’t forget about your lips – Bobbi

Brown’s Rich Lip Colour in Old Hollywood, or MAC Lipstick in Full Fuchsia add true defi nition and a fabulous

fi nishing touch to your look. Just remember: colour affects your mood, emotions and behaviour, so if there’s one thing you do this autumn, invest in colour, colour and more colour – it’s as strong as the impression it creates.”
