Get away…

As the New Year is being celebrated and plans are being made for 2012, our minds are sure to drift to far away lands in search of the perfect holiday this summer. Over the coming months Around Town will be reviewing some of its favourite travel locations from Britain and abroad to give you a starting off point to plan your journey. With suggestions of activities to plan,

landmarks to visit, restaurants to dine at or even just some beaches to relax on: we hope to transport you to you holidays early and help you book your ideal getaway this year.

We begin our search of holiday and short break destinations with two locations: A relaxing break in North Yorkshire, and, for a European option, Lake Garda in Italy.

Lake Garda, Italy

For a holiday further away we’d like to recommend stunning Lake Garda, in Italy. The ‘Riviera of Olives’ is the largest lake in the country and is surrounded by picturesque Italian towns.

Things to do

Focusing on the town of Garda itself at the north of the lake, there is a fabulous range of walking, climbing and watersports available.

The ‘Rocca’ is a 250m high rock outcrop which was originally a 15th Century fortress, but was destroyed by the Venetians when they took cont rol of Lake Garda. The testing hike to the top of this landmark rewards explorers with stunning views of the lake and the surrounding villages. Unsurprisingly, windsurfing is extremely popular: the lake experiences a cold wind from the mountains at the north of the lake in the mornings, but warmer winds from the south in the afternoon.

Where to eat and drink As the district thrives on tourism, there is a variety of traditional Italian cuisine on offer in the local towns, but what makes Lake Garda so interesting is the local produce it has on offer. A major wine producing area can be found behind the town of Garda; from there a delicious light red wine is produced and the town has a popular wine festival every year to celebrate this. The town also boasts the production of some beautiful olives: known here for their light, fruity and non-acidic taste. While the history of lemon farming in Garda dates as far back as the 15th Century; the town Limone, with its ‘lemon houses’, are still clearly visible from ferries on the lake.

How to get there The closest and most convenient airport is Verona with Ryanair, Easyjet and British Airways all providing regular flights to that destination. Package holidays are recommended for the area from Thomson Holidays and First Choice – though with a little research it is possible to travel to the district independently.

With its stunning mountain backdrop – Lake Garda is an incredible destination for any holiday maker who values the local history and culture of Italy. However, the range of outdoor sports on offer also offers visitors a little bit more than just an average European trip.
