Valentines
Love is in the air!
It’s that time of year again - when we all get loved up for February 14th, Valentine’s Day. Whether you choose to give flowers, chocolates, jewellery or book a meal at a restaurant, it’s time to show your loved one how much you care on this special day.
Today Valentine’s day is a big event in the annual calendar and you’ll be spoilt for choice by the wide range of cards, flowers and gifts to suit all personalities and all budgets. If you’re planning to dine out at a local restaurant, then you need to get organised and book in good time as tables will soon go in the few weeks before the big day.
So how did this special day originate and who is Valentine? According to history and tradition, Valentine’s Day is a celebration to honour the Italian priest Saint Valentine but which is now celebrated by the exchange of tokens of love and affection.
The day first became associated with lovers in the Middle Ages when couples began to exchange gifts. Modern Valentine symbols include hearts, flowers and images of Cupid, the image of love.
Originally paper Valentine’s became so popular in the 19th Century that they had to be produced in factories to meet demand. Fancy cards and expressions of love were made using ribbon and real lace.
After the 19th Century, hand written Valentine’s gave way to mass produced cards and gifts. Today the UK Valentine’s day market is estimated to be worth around £1.3 billion and around 25 million cards are sent every year.

In the United States around 190 million cards are sent and many of those are given to family members and children as well as to husbands, wives etc.
Today cards of all types are available from real romantic expressions of love to novelty and funny cards.
If you’re buying flowers for your wife or girlfriend, then remember that red roses are the traditional symbol of love. A single red rose is often given to ladies enjoying a Valentine’s day
meal in a local restaurant, for example. Many restaurants offer special food on Valentine’s Day to include heart shaped puddings and appropriately named food, all with a love ‘theme’.
Tables will be decorated with hearts and flowers while staff do their best to ensure couples have a really lovely evening. Whatever you do this Valentine’s Day, make sure you show the one you love how much you really care.
