The day ended with Susana Bueno making a statement to the Gringo Ga- zette saying she wants to go on record that she was in fa- vor of the work and is not a part of the Valdez group. Pedrin, Trevino, Agundez and Reachi went in search of Governor Covarrubias to try and persuade him that this lawyer’s tiny fan base is not representative of the commu- nity. Left holding the bag, of course, is the construction company which had their heavy equipment and man- power ready to go.

The next day the gover- nor announced that the money is going to the Comondu mu- nicipality, in the northern part of the state. The governor’s words to the Sudcaliforniano newspaper were:

“Public works are to be enjoyed, to make people happy, which is the interest of the state government. With so many needs around the state, if we see that the works are not appreciated, we well take it to where it is appreciated and needed.” He added, “We will pay a penalty to the company that had the contract, but our in- tention is always positive, for the Los Cabos people to enjoy the works that are re- quested.”

It was a sad day for Pedrin and Trevino who worked so hard to obtain the $12 million for their neigh- borhood, only to see it lost because of a tiny but vocal minority.  But wait! There’s more!

The next day the local news- paper, Tribuna, published an article that they were for the project. Also quoted as for the work were Director of Tourism Ruben Reachi, Mayor Tony Agundez, president of the Hotel Ass. Gonzalo Franyutti, and most of all the two downtown his- toric association leaders, Pedrin and Trevino who never gave up the fight, kept push- ing. The plucky gals petitioned the Governor to reconsider, pointing out that important civic leaders were all for it, and it was only a minority who was against it. They pointed out that those opposed were not even property owners who had any kind of stake in the city. Gov- ernor Covarrubias reconsid- ered, and at press time the on again off again $12 million project was on again.
