The story of Muvezi stone art gallery is one of charity as well as art. Muvezi in the African language of Shona means stone carver. The
Muvezi company was started by Canadians Brian Carpenter and Greg Pendura who have been business partners in various en-
terprises for 25 years and started Muvezi five years ago as a way to give back something positive to society. Pendura spends about six months here in Los Cabos. Shona art got its start in the sixties, when Frank McEwen was the curator of the newly estab- lished national gallery in Southern Rhodesia. He taught workshops in painting and sculpture and in- fluenced what is now called Shona art by offering Zimbabwean people instruction in technique. Now in their fourth generation, these Africans have created a na- tional art movement. Their works are as individual as the stone and the artist. There are figures, ani- mals, and abstract works, in all shapes and sizes, which add a certain ‘je ne sais quoi’ to any home or garden.

Pendura tells us their main fo- cus is the charitable work they do. Muvezi the gallery supports a two-fold charitable organization: Working with and assisting Zim- babwean artists, and working to combat Malaria in places where
According to Pendura they both became involved in Shona art because of their love for it. Zimbabwe is in “a dire economic and political situation and Shona artists were having a difficult time selling their art and making enough for their families to survive on,” he tells us. Stone sculptors who had
studied for years to perfect their craft were leaving their studios to seek employment with daily wages in order to survive. Or they were forced to buy poor quality stone and produce poor quality art.
