He uses clay he digs out of the ground right beside his new structure, adds sand, binds it with hay, and then adds a white slime called lime, and lastly a tint for presentation and moisture control. Essentially, the house is one big adobe brick. He starts layering it from the ground up, and can add an- other 18 inches about every 24 hours as it dries enough to take the load. Building doesn’t get much more envi- ronmentally friendly than that. Bob tells us there is a seven story adobe building just bound together with hay, like

At this point he doesn’t grow his own mangos as they are cheap and abundant dur- ing their short season. There are several small towns nearby that build up a big fes- tival around the mangos, making and selling hundreds of products out of them, from jello to candy to margaritas. Because he needs to buy enough mangos to last him until they come in season the following year, Bob’s got mangos stowed away in ev- ery friend’s freezer.

The Pudwills have an eclectic orchard, with a field of one of a kind trees, includ- ing bananas, macadamia nuts, mangos, apples, and even lemons, which are hard to find in Mexico. It’s all sup- ported by an elaborte irriga- tion system he built.

They have an amazing spring fed natural granite swimming pool which they made by simply cleaning out a pond that was already there and building a little dam, then added some chlorine, and presto! They have a crystal clear granite bottom swim- ming pool.


Next to the pool is Liz’s art studio, where she paints. Her work is available for sale, and most are inspired by lo- cal scenes and historical buildings.


But the mission with this rancho is to make wine! Bob built a wine cave into the side of a hill, where he can make it and store it in a tempera- ture controlled environment. He’s got all his equipment set up, and he is cranking out some mango wine, but he’s waiting on his permits to sell it. He uses stainless steel bar- rels to store it, not oak bar- rels, and he says that just shows the flavor of this wine will stand on its own and doesn’t have to be coaxed along with more processes. He also makes wine from grapes, plums, and honey from their own bee hives. The wine label will be Rancho La Venta, the name of their ranch, which means a way station or stop over. We tasted it and were blown away. It is very, very good. Surprisingly, not too fruity, not even very sweet. It is a light white wine, with very few sulfites in it. It’s also 13.5% alcohol. As soon as he’s got his permits lined up, in January he thinks, they will
