When Richard Barnhart started his construction company in 1969, he owned a couple of welding machines and one truck. Forty years later, Barnhart Crane & Rigging has created a nationwide reputation for taking on challenging heavy lifting and transportation projects, and finishing them safely and on time. Since its founding, Barnhart has grown from an office staff consisting of he and his wife, to a company comprised of over 1000 employees in 27 branches across the country.


In response to his lifelong passion for building, Richard Barnhart created a construction company that focused on big structures: bridges, civic buildings, and heavy industry. Te company’s big break came in 1970, when Barnhart took on a project erecting steel for the old Schlitz brewery in Memphis, Tennessee. Several other large jobs that followed set the young company firmly on its feet. During the following decades, Richard Barnhart made innovations in tilt-up construction that later became standard practice in the industry.
