“We take pride out there every day knowing the cables are really the
scope for the celebrated span includes the replacement of the cable band caulking and application paint to the cables, cable bands and accessories.
Another challenge was to identify the most cost effective means of gaining safe and efficient access to the cables which at the highest point are 746 feet above the water and 500 feet above the roadway. To perform the majority of the work, a 50-foot- long hoisted or traveling stages will be used. On portions of the cables reachable from the sidewalk, fixed scaffolding will be used. Te plan that emerged called for two crews to start the
repainting process at midspan on the west side main cable as, at this location, the main cable is more readily accessible directly from the bridge’s west sidewalk. Te scaffolding to be used at the midspan portion was delivered and unloaded directly onto the sidewalk at night to avoid traffic delays. Ten, it was erected to entirely encompass a 400-foot-long section, rising about 25 feet up from the cable and is 9 feet wide. Te scaffold was then designed fitted with tarps to protect the cable and workers from the elements while work proceeds. Work began with the replacement of the cable band caulking, or the packing in the cable band joints. Te cable bands consist of massive steel castings that are semicircular in shape and clamped onto the main cable with 2-1/4 inch diameter high strength steel bolts. Tere are both longitudinal and circumferential grooves that were packed with waterproofing material during the original
75TH ANNIVERSARY INFORMATION:
Each main cable has sixty-one bundles of galvanized steel wire. Cable formers maintain the bundles in the correct position as they are spun.
The famed span is celebrating its 75th anniversary on May 27, 2012. To celebrate, the Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District, the public agency that operates the bridge, has partnered with its neighbors — the nonprofit Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy, the National Park Service at the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, and the Presidio Trust, to plan a number of special tributes. The 75th anniversary is also embracing several major visitor enhancements including a new welcome center, interpretative information, collectable memorabilia, trail improvements, new overlooks, and much more. The new 75th website offers insights into how to participate and what is being planned for the anniversary year of 2012:
