OH WHAT A Per f ect Da y by Valerie Breese
On a rare occasion when both my daughter and I had some free time we arranged an afternoon together in Greenwich. We settled on meeting in the National Maritime Museum’s café situated in
the new Sammy Ofer wing at the rear of the museum. The new entrance to the museum through the park makes it so easy to access now. The café has such appeal its hard not to stop for lunch. The daily menu is written up on the wall offering a good choice of dishes
while making the most of what’s in season and thankfully, a chip-free zone. But viewing the food nails it, who could pass on the succulent beef, vegetable and ale pie with a creamy baked potato, I couldn’t. My daughter choose a large crispy cheese and tomato pizza and vegetable cuscus, good to see her getting her five a day. The café’s bright, modern and yet comfortable you can sit and admire the unhindered views through the floor to ceiling windows. We took a quick peep upstairs at the 16” West Brasserie, located exactly
sixteen seconds west from the Prime Meridian Line. This ultra modern restaurant with British cuisine and even more views of the park from either inside or on the large terrace is stunning and we promised to return for Sunday lunch. Time for a tour, we haven’t been here together since a school journey long
ago and she’s impressed with the lay out and hands on approach which will captivate the young and not so. The Sammy Ofer Wing’s Voyagers gallery acts as an introduction to the range of the Museum’s collections combining over 200 objects, many of which have never been on display before, alongside cutting edge audio-visual installations. Moving from the blood soaked clothing of Nelson to the sad personal
stories of the Princess Alice, a pleasure steamer from Woolwich which on returning from a day trip sank at Greenwich with a huge loss of life, mostly women and children, we’re totally engrossed. Still a child at heart she guides me to the shop, glass cabinets of stunning
jewellery and timepieces as well as some imaginative Christmas gift ideas, a few heavy hints and I’ve solved some of my Christmas shopping. A Christmas market will take place on the 8 December in the museum
between 6pm-9pm with brass band, carolers and discounts on gifts and foodie treats, we’ll be there. See ad on pg 40.
