DEKE IS (FAT) BACK by Joe Devine

his New Year’s Eve, Back To The 70s and 80s with DJs Dave Cooper and Deke De Core returns to Blackheath Concert Halls. The night was a very very popular feature there in the 90s, Deke recalls that: ‘Recently I was introduced to two couples who met at the night and both now have children. I feel kind of responsible for those kids.’ This year it returns to bring in 2012.

T

Deke, larger than before, and more of a host and events organiser these days, has been asked to come out of retirement to DJ the night this New Year’s Eve. He started by organising warehouse parties in the early 80s, and clearly recalls the first record he ever played as Bama Boogie Woogie by Cleveland Eaton. ‘The DJ didn’t show up one night. I dashed home to get my vinyl and it went from there.’ Timeout have described his nights in Greenwich during

the 90s as like ‘a really good party in someone’s house.’ Dave Cooper played his first gig at a mate’s cousin’s party in Lee, aged 15, and has played in Ibiza and at Ministry of Sound down the years. He’s been a long time resident at nights in Greenwich, Croydon and Maidstone and now holds a bi-monthly soul/funk/disco/ house night at East Village in Shoreditch, as well as a Saturday morning show on www.stompradio.com 11am-1pm.

Deke describes Back

To The 70s and 80s as ‘a nostalgic evening of fun for everyone. An old-school disco night out.’ Dave says: ‘It’ll be aimed at those wanting a great night out with their family and friends. It’s going to be a real nostalgia trip, a pure feel good night for

anyone from 18 to 50 plus.’

Back To The 70s and 80s is on Saturday 31st December at Blackheath Halls. Doors at 8pm. For tickets call the box office on 02084630100 or visit www.blackheathhalls.com
