Michael Breese reviews Yaki and Yeti

The demise of the English high street Pub is not always a loss to the community. Where once stood the Greyhound, watering hole and landmark for the people of Eltham, there is now the Yak and Yeti Nepalese restaurant; the drinkers’ loss has become the diners’ gain. The building itself still has many original architectural features; the interior has a simple oak fl oor, plain walls decorated with black woodcarvings. The fi rst thing you notice about the food is the immaculate presentation, which is very much infl uenced by European techniques and practice. Diners can feast not only with their eyes on the colour and visual arrangements of their plates, but also the food itself is a quantum leap ahead of the rest.

My partner and I took a daughter and her friend; both near fi fteen. They tucked into Chicken Tikka (as a main) with plain boiled rice and Naan bread, enjoying the mildly spicy chicken. Herself, being in good form, was so wonderfully surprised by the plate of beautiful Tandoori Scallops that her eyes lit up. Seared by the heat of the Tandoor oven and yet not over cooked – perfect. I was slightly jealous until my clove-smoked Tandoori Lamb chops arrived. They were crisply coated yet just pink inside; I could eat food like that till the

sheep run out. Meat cooked like this on the bone gives such great fl avour and I fi nd it hard to resist. Without further thought as to volume along came a Tandoori Mixed Grill on a special tectonic plate. It entertained because each mouthful was different and delectable. The two girls were still attacking their lovely Tikkas while Lamb Roghan Ghost appeared deliciously and briefl y before my partner. Bombay aloo and Bhindi curry arrived with our main course accompanied with cold Cobra beer.

Gulab Jamuns for sweet, and sweet they are. A bit too much for me, but everyone else enjoyed the sugar rush. £103.40 for four plus a hearty doggy bag to take home. Yak and Yeti, 86 Eltham High Street SE9 1BW.

Marta Siolkowska dines at Le Spice At the arrival to New Eltham’s Le Spice, a welcoming waiter greeted us and as he opened the door we were hit with a pleasant aroma of fragrant Indian Cuisine. Once inside the warm and spacious, split-level dining area, with our senses awakened, we were given a choice of seating. We both agreed on slightly secluded, pristinely dressed dining table.

Our host provided us with a wine list and was able to take our drinks order immediately. I was happy with my crisp and fruity L’emage Sauvignon Blank whilst my company enjoyed his pint of traditional draught Cobra. The popadoms arrived promptly with a good selection

of dips and chutneys. We were spoilt for choice by a wide variety of traditional Indian dishes

accompanied by helpful descriptions.

When our starters of Samosas and Butterfl y Prawn arrived, the accompanying, sizzling vegetables served before us instantly wowed us. The mains of Tandoori Chicken and Chicken Passanda along with sides arrived piping hot on traditional crockery. The mild, creamy Passanda with tender chicken pieces was a real treat. Yet I still couldn’t resist reaching across the table to sample my guest’s Tandoori Chicken, succulent and soaked with exotic spices.

Just before requesting the bill we appreciated a portion of ‘Romantica’, refreshing strawberry yoghurt topped with red berries. The relaxed atmosphere and exceptional food served by friendly staff certainly puts Le Spice on my list of good, local restaurants worth revisiting. £39.10 for two. 342 Footscray Road, New Eltham SE9 2EB.
