If you are interested in presiding at a session, email me (jmanfre@ilstu.edu) as soon as possible. We have a large number

of sessions and will need many people to help at these sessions.

IMEA Music Teacher Evaluation Committee

Te Illinois State Board of Education contacted Darcy Nendza and me in late August with an offer to partner with their Performance Evaluation Advisory Council (PEAC) in formulating an assessment system for music educators. Since that time a committee comprised of music educators in all areas of music education, grade levels, and regions of Illinois was formed and met. In addition, members of the committee met with the PEAC consulting team on teacher evaluation and attended the September and October PEAC meetings. Vicki Phillips, an ISBE administrator who heads the PEAC committee, told me that “ . . . I would be shocked to know the number of times PEAC committee members have referenced IMEA.” She stressed how pleased they were that our organization has been pro-active in addressing teacher evaluation in Illinois.

Te IMEA committee on teacher evaluation will focus on developing guidelines for assessments that address individual student growth. In addition, it hopes to design model assessments for music educators. Also, the committee will be working on guidelines and recommended practice on how music educators can communicate with administrative evaluators within the assessment of observation of practice using the Danielson model. Finally, we hope to establish a link on the IMEA website to communicate important information, as well as being a resource, on teacher evaluation.
