Jazz Education Network News for Illinois Teachers

Creativity counts! Kudos to IMEA for asking all of us to reflect on creativity and its place in our classrooms. In jazz we encourage creativity of the individual as we maximize freedom in improvisation. One of my favorite quotes of Miles Davis to encourage reflection and discussion among us and our students is: “Don’t play what’s there, play what’s not there.” Miles says so much with so few words here.

Herbie Hancock encourages us to explore our creativity and to be lifelong learners when he says, “Life is not about finding our limitations; it’s about finding our infinity.” As teachers we know that very few of our students will go into the field as professionals but we rest well knowing that the creative experiences and learning that takes place in jazz ensembles will serve them well in the future.
