SECONDARY GENERAL MUSIC DIVISION Brayer Teague, Vice President

Celebrating the Creative MInd

Looking ahead to the 2012 Illinois Music Education Conference, I am very proud of the Secondary General Music sessions that will celebrate the ‘Creative Mind.’ Here’s a preview of what you can look forward to in January . . .

Thursday, January 26th

Te All-State Composers Showcase Concert will be held on Tursday afternoon–at 3:00 pm–in the Civic Center Teater. Tis will be my sixth and final Composers Showcase Concert to coordinate for IMEA; and I must say this–while I am very proud of all the guest composers, performers, ensembles and music education luminaries that have graced our stage during this annual event, I have never been more excited to announce our headliners. Te international chamber music sensation, eighth blackbird, will open our program and help co-moderate our interviews with the winning student composers. It will be a session you just simply won’t want to miss!

promises and delivers–provocative and mind-changing performances to its burgeoning audiences. Combining brac- ing virtuosity with an alluring sense of irreverence, the sextet debunks the myth that contemporary music is only for a ce- rebral few. Te ensemble attracts fans of all ages to its performances and record- ings, which sparkle with wit and pound with physical energy; it inhabits and explores the sound-world of new music with comfort, conviction, and infectious enthusiasm. eighth blackbird is lauded for its performing style–often playing

from memory with theatrical flair–and for making new music accessible to wide audiences. “It’s new music you can bring home to your mother,” observed the Washington Post. Profiled in the New York Times and NPR’s All Tings Consid- ered, the sextet has also been featured on Bloomberg TV’s Muse, CBS News Sun- day Morning, St. Paul Sunday, Weekend America, and Te Next Big Ting, among others. Te group is in residence at the University of Richmond in Virginia and the University of Chicago.

On Saturday morning of the conference we take time to honor the winners in all 10 categories of the All-State Music Composition Contest. Te Awards Ceremony, which will also include a short recital featuring several of the winning compositions, will begin at 9:30 am at the Apollo Teater. Te Apollo Teater is located at 311 Main Street, approximately 1 ½ blocks east from the Pere Marquette Hotel (toward the river). I guarantee that–should you be able to block this event into your busy conference schedule–you will not be disappointed. It is very exciting and re- warding to see these student composers recognized, and to share in that special moment with them.

Passing the SGM Baton

Tis year marks my sixth and final year serving the IMEA Board of Directors as the VP for Secondary General Music. I must admit, ‘time flies when you’re hav- ing fun’ because it’s hard to image that it has been that long since beginning my work in this area. I had the good fortune to follow an educator I have tremendous respect for, David Fodor, who created the idea of a bi-annual ‘Showcase Concert’ featuring winning compositions from the All-State Music Composition Contest. In the past six years we have been able to build on the foundation and frame-
