EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE Darcy Nendza, IMEA State Office

Keeping the Mind Creative

As we move through this year’s theme of the Creative Mind, it begs the question– just how creative is my mind, and what do I do about that? Te job of managing the day-in and day-out of IMEA, plus imple- menting the future vision of our amazing Board of Directors calls for versatile solu- tions and an open mind. When I listen to a conference speaker or meet a mind that I respect, one of the first questions I ask is, “Who do you read on a daily basis?”

After ten years in this profession, I have established the following list of blogs and journals that are must-reads for me. While no where exhaustive or comprehensive, I find that even if I take five minutes out to see what these folks are saying, my day is much stronger and my mind much more open. I am hoping that some of these writers will assist you in keeping a positive spin on a job that is continuously increasing in difficulty.

If it is happening in the world of the fine arts, then you will hear about it first on Arts Journal. Te number of resources they comb through to bring these articles forward is absolutely amazing. Separated and labeled by genre, the content here is first-rate. If you need any information to share with a class regarding current events in our corner of the world, look no further.

Here is how the blog of Ian David Moss describes itself, “a hub for next- generation ideas on the role of the arts in a creative society.” If you are looking for a new piece for advocacy work or a description of how the arts improves

Te final call on my morning rotation is the Arts Education section of the

the economics of a town, look no further. While the posts might take a while to read and digest, I have found so many amazing resources from Ian that I make it a first-visit in the morn- ing. He also does a great “Around the Horn” wrap-up of the best of the arts web every couple weeks.

A service of the Western States Arts Federation (WESTAF), Barry’s Blog is a compendium of knowledge not just for the arts administrator, as the blog is billed, but for anyone who is looking for the national look on the health of the arts world in general. Although this blog is very funder-heavy in practice, I find great information regarding what is going on at the legislative and fine arts conference level all across the United States.

Americans for the Arts blog. Once again, this is a national point-of-view, but I find it extremely helpful in identifying the places we might be heading.

As we move from the virtual world to the physical, one of the best places for a recharge and increase in creativity is the Illinois Music Education Conference. We hope that you will join us in Peoria this January as we celebrate and explore the Creative Mind. An expanded program of Junior High/Elementary Music clinics, plus Vocal Jazz events completely located within the Peoria Civic Center will bring additional en- ergy to an already amazing conference. IMEA strives each year to bring our attendees the best that music education has to offer. I hope that you will explore the schedule in this journal and join us to contribute to the conversations!

PS - Drop me a note at dnendza@ilmea. org to add to my list of must-reads! Who did I miss, what is out there to expand what we do and who we are?

Illinois Music Education Conference Update

As you may have already heard, the Hotel Pere Marquette in Peoria is closing December 2, 2011 for remodeling. Te owners are planning to take the interior of the building down to the studs and rebuild within the shell. Tis process will take a little over a year. When this construction is finished, ground will be broken on an additional hotel connected to the Pere Marquette.

We are very excited for the city of Peoria and for the expanded facilities available to IMEA and the Illinois Music Education Conference. We have been working very closely with the Peoria Convention and Visitors Bureau to plan alternative sites for the upcoming conference. Te Peoria Civic Center is also making new spaces available for our use.

I look forward to seeing everyone in January for Te Creative Mind–Illinois Music Education Conference 2012.
