Unfortunately, Rega has not been immune to tragedy. In 2010, an ER doctor died after tending to an ath- lete who had been caught by an avalanche. The medic had just finished his work when a second ava- lanche buried him. He died on the way to hospital. The Rega has one of the most modern air

ambulance fleets in Europe, focusing on mountain rescue. They continuously develop new methods for enhancing safety. One of those improvements is the GPS-based landing procedure. Modern navigation systems offer the possibility to land at the Inselspital in Bern (the university hospital in Switzerlands´s

capital city, Bern) using an instrument approach if the weather conditions do not allow a VFR approach. This is a new chapter in rescue flights. Soon all pilots will be trained in instrument flight rules to practice this approach. But the new devel- opments do not stop there. A new feature is avail- able to those who own a smartphone: the rescue app, an iPhone application that alerts Rega, regard- less of your location. The app transmits personal data and the coordinates of its location to the res- cue coordination centre. The app iRega is available for free in the iTunes store. ◆
