We live in times of unprecedented change and uncertainty, fraught with danger yet tinged with a sense of optimism. The democratic ideals of the Arab spring appear to be sweeping Muammar Gaddafi from power in Libya, New York City cleans up after the disruption caused by Hurricane Irene and small businesses here in London and across the UK continue to count the cost of the August riots.

Robert Kilgour is a Scottish serial entrepreneur, investor and property developer who is also CEO of Dow Investments Ltd who own care home operator Renaissance Care (Scotland) Ltd among other investments. He previously founded Four Seasons Health Care which is now one of the UK’s largest care home operators.
This months Entrepreneur Country magazine follows entrepreneurs from around the UK and globally as they share their views and insights on the issues that are affecting their regions and bring you tips for accelerating your business growth. But whilst our focus and flavour this month may be global it has been a month where global attention has been focussed on the UK for two very contrasting reasons. As debate rages over whether the recent riots in London were simply wanton criminal violence or a glimpse at a wider social breakdown so a great British success story has been making headlines.
When news was announced of Autonomy’s $10bn sale to U.S. giant Hewlett Packard, a few may have decried the loss of the latest British innovator to foreign ownership but for the vast majority of British entrepreneurs it was a glowing example of what aiming big really means- it’s not about creating £1m companies, it’s about creating £1bn businesses. Julie Meyer assesses the impact of the Autonomy deal on UK small businesses and I speak to veteran IT entrepreneur Peter Cunningham about his views on building the next generation of great British technology businesses.
