As part of the winning bid led by North East developers, Robertson, ADP has been appointed as the lead architect for the long-awaited £23 million regenera- tion of the Spanish City in Whitley Bay. The iconic Grade II listed dome remains an integral part of the town’s history, despite falling into disrepair, and the ambitious plans will give the site and the town a new lease of life. ADP’s striking design hopes to return the Spanish City to its former glory, with a full restoration of the original dome including its loggias, or winter gardens, on either side of the dome itself. National building envelope specialist Lakesmere has commenced work as part of a £15 million contract for BAA to design and install a complex roof structure for the new Terminal 2 Building at Heathrow Airport. Designed by leading architects Foster & Partners, the project will be delivered by a dedi- cated team at Lakesmere’s head office in Winchester and will result in the employment of up to 60 new site oper- atives. The £2.2 billion facility will provide a new hub for Star Alliance Airlines, which includes British Midland, Lufthansa and United, and will be capable of handling 30 million passen- gers a year by 2019.

As the Government gears up to make Building Information Modelling (BIM) mandatory on almost all its projects within five years, the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) questions why BIM doesn’t measure time. According to CIOB research a high proportion of complex construction projects are likely to be finished more than six months late, due to poor time control. “BIM has clearly moved beyond a narrow band of enthusiasts. There are all kinds of possi- bilities for the industry with this technol- ogy. Many of them are already being realised by some of the more forward- thinking construction businesses, and it’s already clear that contractors who adopt BIM will have a more secure future”, said

Construction materials giant Lafarge is celebrating 15 years of grant-giving to boost community and environmental projects across the UK. Since 1996 and the introduction of the Landfill Communities Fund (LCF), the company has awarded £6.5 million to good causes in areas close to its operations. A new report, published to coincide with this anniversary, looks at some of the more recent LCF funded projects ranging from creating children’s sports facilities to replacing footbridges and erecting a war memorial.

New BBA/TIMSA Scheme The BBA has launched a new scheme for assessing and monitoring U-value and condensation risk calculation com- petency to provide reassurance to the industry. The scheme, devised in association with the Thermal Insulation Manufacturers and Suppliers Asso- ciation (TIMSA), involves key insulation players in the UK – Kingspan, Knauf, Recticel, Rockwool and SIG, and also has the backing of two of the premier U-value software providers, JPA and BuildDesk. Scheme members are required to demonstrate appropriate technical competency and in-house procedural controls to ensure that their declared calculations are reasonable.
