Frozen peas get the Watermatic treatment! Birds Eye’s frozen ‘pea’ process demands huge quantities of water and in order for the processing machinery to run smoothly, without the problems associated with limescale build up, they need a little help from technology. One of the bits of tech- nology the have turned to, to achieve this is Watermatic’s KalGuard + system. Watermatic is increasingly offering many large businesses a way of reducing their energy consumption by reducing limescale build up in their plant and systems. All the water coming into the factory comes
through the KalGuard + unit before heading on down the line for secondary treat- ment at the plant’s massive commercial water softener installation, before heading off to the refrigeration and boiler plant in the factory.

Almshouses delighted with Automist Almshouses are particularly vul- nerable to outbreaks of fire because of the nature of their residents. When Westminster Almshouses were asked to trial Automist, a highly innovative new product from Plumis, they were delighted to agree. Automist uses a high pressure pump to generate a fine water mist from nozzles mounted under a standard tap. It is des-
igned to limit fire growth and minimise the residents’ exposure to toxic gases and heat, making evacuation easier in an emergency. This is particularly relevant for the residents of the Almshouses as it provides precious extra time for the immo- bile, as well as sounding an alarm.

BAL Environmental Adhesives make a difference Building Adhesives Limited has become the first manufac- turer from the tiling industry to be appointed a Partner of Cool Earth, the pioneering organisa- tion working to protect threat- ened rainforests. As part of the agreement, Cool Earth receives a donation for every pack sold from BAL’s innovative ‘Go Greener’ range of five Environmental Adhesives, which
are all manufactured using recycled content. David Hackett, sales and marketing director, said: “The great thing about being a Partner of Cool Earth is that, literally, it makes a measurable difference every time a fixer uses a product from BAL’s Environmental Adhesives range. For every square metre of tiling laid with one of the six products, a square metre of threatened rainforest is protected. In choos- ing where best to invest our support, it was a key factor that most of our ‘Go Greener’ investment would go directly to the rainforest.”
Passive approach inspires Greenpower The Greenpower Centre new headquarters for Greenpower Education Trust has been developed in partnership between architects Emission Zero, Fordingbridge plc and Passivent to provide an inspiring learning environ- ment and innovative test bed for low emission technologies. The building itself demonstrates the concept, having achieved
the best A rating for energy performance. Using innovative ventilation technol- ogy pioneered by Passivent is a key element of the energy efficiency, combining two types of passive (natural) ventilation, one for the building’s open office and lecture area and also an iMEV system for the toilets. The former is managed by a state-of-the-art control system.
Sound absorbing acoustic panel system from RMIG
A new range of interior wall mounted and free-standing acoustic panels has been launched by RMIG to reduce noise and improve sound quality in schools, public buildings, offices and a range of other applications. The Wall range of compact acoustic panels is designed to improve the environment in buildings where echoes or high sound pressure levels cause unacceptable noise and make it difficult to distinguish speech in areas including sports halls, classrooms and open plan buildings. By using a highly efficient sound absorption material faced with thin sheet steel – incorporating thousands of 1.5mm perforations, mounted in an aluminium frame – the RMIG Wall system reduces sound in the 125Hz to 4kHz fre- quency band and achieves an absorption level of between 75 per cent and 100 per cent across the 500Hz to 2kHz range. Wall 100 acoustic panels are designed to be easily mounted and can be used as an unobtrusive magnetic notice board. In addition to the standard RAL colours of black or white and an aluminium look finish, the panels can incorporate printed photographic images or special designs, such as company logos, graphics or patterns.
