INNOWAVE
Anoush Mortazavi is the designer behind Innowave, a high-quality microwave oven for use in small kitchens where space is at a premium. The oven is designed for both new and refurbished kitchens and can be retrofi tted into any standard-size drawer slot. Not only does the oven free up valuable work surface space, but it also ensures that the enormous and imposing metal boxes that we have become used to are neatly tucked away out of sight.
The innovative stirrer mode uses an extremely slow rotating aluminium blade to stir the food, replacing the need for a turntable and increasing cooking effi ciency.

LOCI
The issue of safety in the kitchen was addressed by Ben Hopwood through his design of a cooking system for the visually impaired. The appliance utilises induction technology to cook foods and has a number of tactile markers designed into the product to ensure the safest location, positioning and alignment of pans.
Silicone pan sleeves are used to ensure increased grip and to protect the user from hot surfaces. An innovative ‘Twist and Lock’ colander design also ensures that the pan can be handled safely with both hands as there is no need to handle the colander during straining.
Not only is Loci safer for those who are visually impaired but it also promotes a greater sense of independence and confi dence for the user. During his research, Ben also found that the target audience of Loci could be extended to include the elderly, children and those with a wide range of disabilities.

The Athena kitchen and dining installation is the brainchild of DeMontfort University student Guy Morgan. Designed for single people, professional couples and young families, Athena is a response to the shrinking room sizes of new build homes in the UK, many of which have been designed with a combined open plan kitchen and living area that seldom leaves enough room for a dining area.
Guy’s design integrates the dining table and seating into the kitchen furniture, saving space and providing a much more functional solution.

Created by Lap Fung Man, a student of Northumbria University, originally from Hong Kong, Snow White is a new design for a refrigerator which uses the characteristics of light to increase user interaction. The fridge door is made from translucent plexiglass and features built-in LED lights which are activated by touch sensors installed in the door.
When the user touches the door the lights illuminate, clearly displaying the contents of the fridge. When the lights are off, the black plexiglass is opaque and acts like a mirror.
